developmenthas been guided by the study ofhuman  
hearing,itsdesignrigorouslytested,anditscomponents  
optimizedto deliverclean,clearmusicalsound.  
Placingthesubwooferneartoaroom boundarywilltend  
to increase its apparentbass output,butmayresultin  
"boomy"or"muddy"sound.Conversely,placingitfarther  
away from room boundaries willtend to decrease its  
apparent bass output, but may result in improved  
articulationandclarity.  
Since the quality ofyourspeakers is one ofthe most  
importantfactorsinmaximizingthesoundyou'llgetfrom  
yourmusic and home theatersystem,we're sure that  
you'llfind yourpurchase ofthe SW 10 lland SW 12 a  
goodinvestment,andinviteyourcomments.

horizontalplane and along the same wallas the main

The NHT SW 10 lland SW 12 Powered Subwooferis a  
compact,versatile and powerfulamplified subwoofer  
designedtoprovidelow frequencyreinforcementforhigh  
performanceaudioandhometheatersystems.  
Volume:Thiscontrolallowsyoutoadjustthegainofthe  
Subwooferrelative totherestofyoursystem. Manylis-  
tenersmakethemistakeofsettingsubwooferstooloud,  
which can cause excess bloatand loss ofdetailand  
musicality.Aproperlycalibratedsubwooferblendsinwith  
the speakers and does notcallattention to itself. To

tening forproperfrequency balance.W hen balanced,  
youwillhearimprovedbassextension,butnotbeaware  
thatitis comingfrom thesubwoofer.

From this point on, the volume control on your  
receiver/preamplifierwillcontrolthe overallvolume of  
yoursystem,includingthesubwoofer.  
The Boundary EQ:This is a feature unique to NHT  
Evolution products. Reflective boundaries (such as  
walls)reinforce a speakers bass output(3dB fortwo  
walls,6dB fora corner)ifthe subwooferis placed near  
them. Conversely,placingasubwooferoutintheroom  
resultsinarelativedecreaseinbassoutput. Boundary  
reinforcementmaylead to low frequencyresponse that

is uneven. Som e frequencies willsound exaggerated  
relative to others,orthe subwooferwillsound thin and  
lack impact. The Boundary EQ controlallows you to  
compensate forthe effects ofroom boundaries on the  
frequencyresponse

ting is typicalformostDolbyDigital/DTS applications.

ThefollowingdiagramsshowninFig.1show thecorre-

These diagrams are guidelines only. Your room  
acousticsand personaltasteswillultimately dictate the  
finalsetting.  
SUBWOOFER PHASE: This switch sets the phase of  
thesubwooferateitherthe0°position(normalphase)or  
the 180° position (reverse phase) to achieve the  
smoothestpossiblebassresponseinyoursystem.  
Thisphase-reversingoptionisimportantbecauseifbass  
frequenciescomefrom boththesubwooferandthemain  
speakers,peaksanddipsinthefrequencyresponsecan  
occuratthelisteningposition.Inthesecases,reversing  
thesubwooferphasecanimproveblendingandbalance.

LOW PASS FILTER:Thiscontroldeterminestheupper-  
limit frequency the subwoofer willreproduce. For  
example, setting the filter at 100Hz willcause the

The key to good subwoofer /speaker integration is  
repeated listening,followed by making smallre-adjust-  
ments ofthe subwoofercontrols.The mostimportant

FILTER,followed by the VOLUME CONTROL settings

noorminimalmaintenance,aslongasyouavoidexpos-

Cleancabinets,whennecessary,usingadampclothor  
a mild,non-abrasive cleaner;to clean grilles,remove  
from speakerand use a softbrush ora vacuum on its  
lowestsetting. Donotattempttocleantheactualdriv-

Troubleshooting  
Ifthe SW 10 llorSW 12 fails to operate atallwhen the  
PowerSwitch isturnedon,thoroughlycheckthepower  
cord,inputandoutputconnections  
Ifthe SW 10 llorSW 12 turnson butthe LED indicator  
failstoilluminate,mis-wiringorapowersurgemayhave  
causedtheprotectionfusetoblow.Replaceitwithoneof  
correcttypeandvalue.  
9.8ChangingtheLineVoltageSetting  
TheSW 10llandSW 12weredesignedtooperateontwo  
linevoltagesettings,115VAC and230VAC.Intheevent  
thatitis necessary to change the line voltage setting,  
begin by turning the powerswitch to the offposition.  
Removealltheconnectionsfrom theamplifier,including  
the detachable powercord. Using a flatblade screw-  
driver,slide the switch to the correctposition. Use the  
115VAC position for110 to 120 VAC,and the 230VAC  
positionfor220to240VAC. Nextyouwilllikelyneeda  
powercordthatfitstheAC receptacleandyouwillneed  
toreplacethefuse(see"ChangingtheFuse"below)  
IftheSW 10llorSW 12turnsonbutitsstatusLED stays  
red,the unitisgone into protectmode,which could be  
caused by incorrectwiring,shortcircuits,orexcessive  
volume.TurnoffthePowerSwitch onthesubwooferfor  
two ormore seconds to reset,and double check all  
speakercablestobesurethatnosmallmetalstrandsare  
shortingtheterminals.
